The IP M&A market is expanding fast, though most transactions and prices remain private. Buying in third party IP (patents, know how, trade marks and indeed all IP classes) can be of real benefit to businesses.
Acquired IP can form one of the building blocks for a new enterprise. Acquisitions of brands are publicly known when they change hands. Acquisitions of patents and the knowledge of experienced engineers to provide business foundations are much less well known, but of course they go on.
More strategically, companies like Tom Tom and Broadcom have acquired patents in order to successfully defend themselves against litigation from competitors. This is a credible strategy for companies of all sizes.
Of equal strategic importance, companies like eBay, RIM and Google have used the M&A markets to fill out their portfolios of patents to defend their own products.
As well as leading its own transactions, ipVA works with the world’s best IP brokerage firms to identify relevant IP where this strategy is of benefit.
