Dave Thomas

Dave is a consultant with ipVA who specialises in IP, business, and product strategies, including due diligence and analysis of core technologies. His expertise lies particularly in relation to IP strategies and IP operations and management, with a long history of work in the telecommunications field.

Dave held senior management and research roles for Texas Instruments in both the United States and Europe for over 20 years, where he successfully managed two internal start ups and the TI/Ericsson Alliance to profit. In 2000 he was awarded the 'Outstanding Alumnus Award’ from UMIST – the first engineer to achieve this recognition. Beyond his expertise in patent and product strategies, Dave is also an inventor and has been granted, or has pending, 27 patents in the field of 3G mobile communication applications, advanced video telephony, steerable antennas, Internet-enabled home communication systems, and WiMAX ship-to-shore communications systems.

Key accomplishments to date

  • Designed the EMP protection utilised in the UK Ptarmigan Battlefield Communications System.
  • Operations manager for two greenfield-to-positive-profit internal start ups at Texas Instruments.
  • Managed the TI/Ericsson Alliance program from start up to over 100M$ net revenue a year.
  • Directed European R&D operation for TI and increased the value of R&D joint funded programs from zero to 20M$ a year.
