Richard Buttrick is a consultant with ipVA and specialises in IP Strategy and IP Value Realisation, including IP Licensing. He works primarily in the areas of Consumer Electronics, Telecommunications, Software, and related industries. Richard is a qualified UK and European patent attorney and has an Joint Honours degree in Electronic Engineering and Physics from Birmingham University.
From 2002 to the end 2009, Richard was with Philips, the Dutch Healthcare, Lighting and Consumer Lifestyle company, with a range of senior roles in IP Licensing, culminating in the role of BG Executive for the Consumer Lifestyle sector where he had overall responsibility for IP issues, including IP creation and value extraction (including licensing) as well assertion-in and other aspect of IP management. While at Philips, Richard held various directorships of IP related companies created by Philips and its partners, including periods of chairmanship of two boards.
Richard has been involved in IP Licensing, including technology transfer, for over twenty years, having had roles at BT, the UK Telecomms operator, and BTG, the technology licensing company. While at BT Richard become closely involved in the establishment of the IPR Policy for ETSI, Europe’s primary telecommunications standards body. This has led him to become an acknowledged expert in the field of patent pools for standards. He continued his work in this field while at Philips and remains actively involved in it.
Since April 2009, Richard has been advising companies on how to establish fit for purpose IP Frameworks (including IP Governance, IP Strategy and IP Management) to realise maximum value from their IP, and then supporting them through the process.
